A Modern Black Forever Home in Douglas, MA
When these homeowners decided to downsize after their kids moved out, they weren’t just building a smaller house, they were building their forever home.

For their new construction home in Douglas, MA, they wanted a modern exterior with one very specific vision: black siding from top to bottom. They also wanted something low-maintenance and durable enough to look great for years to come.
Why James Hardie Was the Right Choice for a Black Home
A black exterior makes a statement, but it also comes with some unique challenges. Think about owning a black car, it looks incredible when it’s clean, but every speck of dust seems to show.
There’s also more happening beneath the surface. Dark exterior materials absorb more heat from the sun, which can increase movement in materials that naturally expand and contract. With traditional wood siding, that movement, combined with exposure to New England weather, can contribute to cracking, peeling and breakdown of the finish over time, creating an ongoing maintenance cycle.
For these homeowners, James Hardie fiber cement was the clear choice. Fiber cement is much more dimensionally stable than wood, making it especially well suited for a dark exterior where the goal is long-term durability with less maintenance.
Working with black also required extra attention during installation. Just like that black car, Midnight Black siding shows dust, dirt and job-site debris much more easily than lighter colors. Our crew took extra care when handling, cutting and installing each piece to keep the finished siding clean and protect the factory-applied finish throughout construction.
The result? The homeowners could get the dramatic, all-black home they envisioned without choosing a material that would require the level of ongoing maintenance associated with a traditional wood exterior.
What BER Installed
To bring the homeowners’ modern vision to life, Bespoke Exterior Remodeling installed:
Smooth James Hardie panels in Midnight Black
Midnight Black James Hardie trim around the windows, doors and rooflines
James Hardie Artisan V-Groove siding at the front entry and over the back patio
Midnight Black Hardie trim wraps around the posts supporting the back patio overhang and deck
The combination of smooth panels and Artisan V-Groove added subtle texture and architectural interest while keeping the home's monochromatic exterior clean and modern.
Built Through a New England Winter
This project was completed in approximately six weeks, and right through the winter. Despite battling typical New England weather along the way, the exterior products selected for the home allowed our team to continue installation throughout the season.
The result is a bold, modern exterior designed around exactly what these homeowners wanted for their next chapter: a beautiful forever home without the maintenance demands of a traditional wood exterior.
